3 stars may be a bit harsh but I feel that I have to warn people that the Operating Instructions, written in Japanese English are, in my humble opinion, very inadequate. E.g. "Operating with remote control: The menu screen transition is the same as when the buttons on the main unit are used". I think I know what it means - or do I? And further on: "Using the remote control supplied will enable controlling almost all the functions of this camera to be controlled." It is a bit like reading one of those foreign menus translated into English. It also, for example, has a function called Quick Start. Unless I have missed it, (which I could have done) it does not tell you anywhere what Quick Start does for you - just that it consumes more power and how to turn it off. On the other hand it tells you about a dozen times that the camera may not work if you turn it on with the lens cap fitted - that came as a complete surprise - I thought that all cameras only operated if the lens was covered!
It is such hard work that I called Panasonic here in the UK to ask if they had an alternative instruction booklet but of course they do not. They sounded sheepish so I am pretty sure that they know it is rubbish. By comparison, I have just bought a new digital camera (Fuji Finepix) and I must say that their instructions are a model of clarity.
I think this is probably not a bad bit of kit if I had the patience to sit down and work it all out. However, the sad thing is that after a few months of ownership, I am still not sure whether it is any good. As it is, I now rather wish I had bought something else.
OK I admit it. I am not very patient and I am not technically minded but my advice is - unless you have the patience or the knowledge or you have a friend who has the knowledge, think twice about buying this one.
Postscript: Written some months later for what it is worth.
1. I did not give this 4 stars.
2. I had a problem with the camcorder and Panasonic told me to send it for repair to their repairers (within warranty). However, It seems there was no technical fault so the repairers demanded £53 in order to return the camera. Panasonic said it was not their fault and had no record of my conversation but as a "gesture" agreed to reiburse half of the cost. I have therefore been without the camera, I have had a great deal of hassle and have had to pay over £26 all due to an incompetent Panasonic employee on their help desk.
I would therefore change what I said above: DONT BUY A PANASONIC CAMCORDER - LOOK AT SONY

This is worth buying over the 27B model because it comes with excellent editing software for a beginner or intermediate. The zoom is the major bonus on the camcorder making it excellent for safari and for long range shots, it is also very compact. It takes reasonable stills although they can't compare to a decent camera. Beware in dark conditions like many cams it struggles and on full zoom you really have to have a small tripod or it shakes too much even when held steadily. Note it is not a 3CCD camera so the picture quality is good rather than superb. In windy conditions like most cams the wind noise reduction system cannot cope. A word of warning if you want to be able to edit your film and then move the finished piece from the editing software back onto mini dv tape - you cannot do it with this model. This is not mentioned in the sales literature as far as I could tell but when you read the instructions small print it says this will only work on the 57 model in this series. This caught me out hence 4 stars.

What an amazing piece of kit, my last camcorder was analogue,(and at least twice the size !) and digital is streets ahead. This particular model has everything a serious hobbyist could desire, yet it's about a half the size of any of it's peers. With the features it's got and the asking price, this is a total " no brainer" nothing else for the same price comes anywhere near, and the handling is sublime......quality of images superb !! get it now !!! Ordered Sunday.....Delivered Tuesday.....Free delivery !!!
