5 Reviews for Sanyo Xacti HD2 High Definition Digital Movie Camera
Excellent machine. - 22 Feb 2008

I bought my camera from Singapore last year where it was £50 cheaper. My requirement was to combine still camera with movie camera in a super-portable form - and this camera achieves that. The picture is lush... the colours vibrant and sharp. I happily take the camera everywhere....it'll fit comfortably in a trouser pocket (or the wife's handbag)... battery lasts for ages...The quick-start is a real plus - just take off the lens cap and it's shooting. I love the way I can slot the memory card directly into my PC and download the files in seconds. Only complaint is the user manual, which isn't great. I just don't understand why other manufacturers have caught on to this design and functionality!
Great entry level hd - 17 Feb 2008

This is a great budget hd camcorder and has been unfairly judged on hd camcorders that are much more expensive. For general family stuff and holidays this is ideal better than tape for sure, ok its not great in low light like a lot of camcorders, but how often do you need it in low light? If so switch some friggin lights on and its ok. I have found that getting the right iso settings and choosing the right colour setting helps lots also. The size of it and gun style grip appeals and seems more natural than other designs. Also if you have a huge tv i.e around 50 inch then its going to push the boundaries and stretch a few pixels but on an average size tvs its great.I would have liked a wider angle lens but you carn't have everything at this price.
Not a bad little camera but its hardly HD - 09 Feb 2008

I really wanted to love this camera and read a lot of reviews about it prior to purchasing it. I like what Sanyo are trying to do with the Xacti range of hybrid cameras but unfortunately they just don't manage it. This camera has a lot of cool features and its size is a real benefit, it is nice and light so you can easily carry it in your pocket. The photo quality is pretty decent however I am comparing it to my old 2Mp Sony cybershot.
At the time I purchased this camera there were three main contenders at the low end of the HD market. These were the HD2, Aiptek's GO-HD and Canon PowerShot TX1. This camera trumps the other two outright but then they are pretty poor cameras to begin with. A lot of fuss was made about Aiptek's GO-HD since it was the first sub-500 pound camera to make use of the H.264 encoding architecture. However, if you search the internet you will soon discover that the GO-HD is barely a working product. It has an appalling bit rate, the sound is at times virtually none existent and I won't even mention the optics. The 720p feature on the TX1 is more for novelty value than anything else since it uses JPEG motion for its encoding.
The HD2 encodes its videos in the basic MPEG4 AVC codec (not H.264) and the resulting videos are no better than a standard DV camcorder running at 16:9 (and in some cases worse). As with a lot of these cameras at the moment the HD2 struggles in low light situations. There are plenty of ISO options, but the truth is your not going to want to use them since the higher the ISO the more noise you introduce into your video. There are also arguments about whether these cameras are filming in 720p at all, or merely up scaling internally.
With all that being said I still gave the camera three stars, however this was mainly for its form factor and ease of use. If you seriously want a HD camcorder then go and look at a decent HDV model, because at present they are still offering the best solution (even over the much touted AVCHD based cameras). If you are still considering this camera then I would recommend the HD700 which Sanyo quietly released at the end of 2007.
It shocks me that as of writing the HD2 is actually listed on Amazon as £40 more expensive than the HD700. The HD700 is basically a smaller version of the same camera and guess what... it uses H.264 encoding so the image quality is much better. The HD1000 is also definitely worth a look but if you can afford that then you may as well spend a bit extra and get a HDV or HDR camcorder.

This is a fantastic pocket sized camcorder, of course if your filming in the dark you wont get a great picture, however I have some good concert footage and its great for the salsa classes, superb zoom, but no viewfinder absolutely no sound problems, sounds great on my TV, great price too, I paid more on ebay, plus shipping and import tax
Good things come in small sizes - 30 Aug 2007

I read the reviews on Amazon as well as a handful of others around the web before deciding to purchase one of these for my girlfriend. I have to say that for the form factor, this is a wonderful little device. Especially amazing is the fact that it does 720p. I found the controls fairly intuitive and the video quality more than acceptable for the price. I purchased a couple of 2Gb cards which will store about 40 minutes of high-def video each. Overall, a great buy for the money (and size). If your needs demand something pocket-sized that will shoot high-def 16:9 widescreen video, then this is a good buy.
