I think the previous reviewer must have worked for Sanyo.
This DVR7300X us fantastic value for money. I have had the Vivitar DVR540 which has been great but have bought this one as an upgrade. A camera of this quality, with a free 1gb card that I didn't expect, for £85 is amazing. Look at the cost of an equivalent Sanyo to see how good value this is.Ordered late Sunday, arrived Tuesday. Will use again.

I liked the idea of a camera/camcorder hybrid, since I use both functions on my ageing digital camera, so I thought I'd found what I was looking for when I saw the 7300x. Actually I suspect that such a hybrid hasn't been satisfactorily acheived yet, and what you need to know about this camera is that it's a camcorder that tries to take pictures, not a stills camera that tries to do movies.

The movie quality is pretty good for this price - smooth with good resolution. The microphone isn't so good - has trouble picking up voices when the subject is further away than a couple of yards, for instance. If you record in a quiet room, there was also an annoying background crackle on the audio track.

But it was the photos that I couldn't accept (and the reason why I returned the camera in the end). The camera doesn't have a flash (although it shows flash symbols on the display) and uses an LED on the front instead (yes, like a camcorder would). As a result it's utterly lost in low light, and you get some very odd looking photos. The focus is also very disappointing - again, like a camcorder, it assesses an average focus from the centre of the screen rather than using any fixed points. So you never know if your picture will be tightly focussed or not (and those I tried weren't). Add to this the fact that the camera has a single white balance setting for outdoors, rather than separate settings for cloudy and sunny, and you can end up with some unpleasant pale or washed out effects.

I wanted to like this camera - it's nicely presented, it has an OK feel, it's easy enough to use, it fits in your back pocket, it has extras such as voice recorder and mp3 player, transfer to PC is easy, and Vivitar are a reasonably ethical company. This might be quite a good camera among its rivals. But in the end you judge a camera by the results, and for the sorts of things I like to capture, this wasn't up to scratch.
